Continued from page ONE - Atlanta Picnic

Atlanta, Georgia- The Cape Verdeans of Atlanta (CVA) kicked off a successful weekend with a Dance Party on Friday night at Club La Vida featuring music by DJ Guelas to celebrate Cape Verde’s 550th Anniversary. A crowd of about 100 people enjoyed music, dancing and a presentation about the Cape Verdean Islands. CVA committee members including President Glynis Ramos- Mitchell, Joe Ramos, Alcides Vicente, Karen Samedo and Maria Rose hosted the event that continued into the early morning.

On Saturday afternoon, despite occasional thunder showers, more than 200 people attended the CVA annual Picnic at Grant Park in Atlanta. Special guest Cape Verdean Consul Pedro Carvalho and his Attachée Veronica Martins shared with the crowd Cape Verde’s impressive accomplishments since independence 35 years ago.  Also, the Consul spoke of the various services provided on behalf of the Cape Verdean government by the Consulate Office in Boston, MA. Consul Carvalho answered many questions about immigration, emigration and how CV-Americans can apply for dual citizenship

Another highlight of the day was when City Councilman Michael Julian Bond presented the CVA with a proclamation from Mayor Kasim Reed declaring July 17, 2010 as Cape Verdeans Day in the City of Atlanta.

The CVA proudly recognized graduating students including Edwin Mitchell from Middlebury College in Vermont, Ana Maria Hazard from the University of California-Berkeley and others. Several Cape Verdeans introduced their businesses and professional services.

Delicious CV food was in abundance including Catchupa made by Lidia Soares, Catchupa de Atum by Glynis Ramos-Mitchell, Pasteles by Abraao De Sousa, Linguica by Joe Ramos, and Alan Sena, as well as gufonguinhos by Renee Pires and Maria Rose. DJ Guelas provided the music for dancing.  A fun and So Sabi time was had by all!  Viva Cabo Verde na Atlanta!
